May Day Baskets

May Day baskets can be given to friends and family, as well as taken to elderly neighbors or nursing homes. While fresh flowers and candy treats are usually left in the baskets, you can put other things as well. I think fresh flowers, a few tea bags and some little homemade cookies would be wonderful! One of the most popularly known May Day traditions is to hang a basket full of spring flowers, candy and/or other small gifts on a neighbor's doorknob. The trick is you don't want the neighbor to see you! If you get caught, you are supposed to get a kiss.
This would be a great idea for little one to put together and hand out to your elderly neighbors. So pick some wild flowers, make some cookies, and stamp on a paper bag, what a great way to teach your children kindness.

Go to oldfashionedliving.com and look under Holidays > Spring > Charming May Day Baskets, there you will learn a little more about May Day.

FUDGE

My sister makes the best fudge in Texas....Heck, the whole world. I have tried many times to make fudge and we usually end up eating it with a spoon. If you taste a piece it just melts in your mouth... perfect. Sarah (my daughter), Chrissy (my sister) and I wrote a quick poem about her fudge on Easter day as we were stuffing our faces with it, sugar comma.

Aunt Terri's Fudge
Fudge, Fudge, Fudge
Aunt Terri's Fudge
Makes my tummy Pudge, Pudge, Pudge
It's made down South
It melts in your Mouth
O, Aunt Terri's Fudge!

Bacon Cheddar Scalloped Potatoes

I love trying new recipes especially when they turn out this good. This one is scrumdiddlyumptious!!! How can you go wrong with potatoes, cheese and bacon???? I got this recipe from kraftrecipes.com, they send me a newsletter about once a week. This recipe called for maple syrup but I left that out and I adjusted it to make it easier.

Bacon Cheddar Scalloped Potatoes
1 onion (minced)
7 strips of bacon
1 1/4 cup of chicken broth
1/2 cup of milk
4 oz of cream cheese (softened)
5 potatoes sliced thinly
4 cups of cheddar cheese

Cook the bacon, remove and throw the onions in and cook until transparent. Add the broth, milk, cream cheese and stir for about 5 minutes over med heat until cream cheese is melted. Crumble the bacon. Add the bacon and 2 cups of cheddar cheese to the skillet. Spray the bottom of a 13 x 9 pan and layer half of the potatoes in it. Cover with half of the sauce. Layer on the rest of the potatoes and the rest of the sauce, cover with 2 cups of cheddar cheese. Cover and bake for 50 minutes. Uncover and bake for 15 minutes longer.

Little Toy Trains

I love the song by the Forester Sisters "Little Toy Trains". I have a cassette from years ago and I've tried to buy a CD several times with no luck. This is the inspiration behind the first scrap book page. I purchased the SVG file from Treasure Box Designs "All Aboard". I think the bears are just precious. The second page is the cover page for Emma Grace. I printed a page using a font called Southern Accent at 120 pt. I taped the page to a light box, placed the scrapbook paper over the page and traced it with a ball point pen. I wish I had a printer that I could print on 12" wide paper but I don't. I practiced using an ultra fine sharpie marker but I found that the pen ink was darker than the sharpie marker or maybe it just soaked in and made it seem lighter. I don't particularly like my handwriting but this turned out fine and it's hard to mess up a font like that. It does add that personal touch!

Chocolate Easter Bunny

On Easter morning we would get up early and run to see if the Easter bunny had been there. There in the basket with his head sticking up above all the others would be a chocolate Easter bunny...yum. So here's to all of those chocolate Easter bunny's. I used two shades of green markers to draw the flower stems and leaves. I cut the tulip shapes and inked the edges brown. I made stamens with crepe paper, using a tan marker, I marked the edge and then cut it into 1/2" strips. I rolled the crepe paper between my fingers and it twisted into a tiny cord, see bottom picture. I glued the stamens onto the paper and placed the tulips on top. I needed a poem so I called upon Amy (my daughter) for help...I think she did a great job. The flowers in my garden look so neat, especially the tulips that smell so sweet. I have red ones and yellow ones and purple ones it's true, but as for my favorite I'd have to say it's blue. It attracts something special, a delightful noon treat, a little chocolate bunny with big chocolate feet. The bunny knows me and I sure know him, after all I try to steal a nibble every now and then!

Snowman and Baby Birth Pages

The first page is soft pink with white dots and white accents. A soft page for the sweet baby girl who will be using it. The second page is for January because baby, it's cold outside. It's a marshmallow snowman with metal snowflake brads. I punched snowflakes from the title and used them around the snowman also. I bought the marshmallow snowman from Little Scraps of Heaven Designs and I plan on using the design for other holidays, put bunny ears on him and you have a marshmallow bunny.

Family Night

This first calendar page is a family page. I'm not sure what title I'm going to put on it yet, Family Night, Game Night or Peek-A-Boo. For the second page you could place a square photo inside the circle or enlarge a photo and cut it into a circle and place it on the page and pull the lace over the photo. With a 1 1/2" circle punch place 3-4 photos inside the circle.

Easter "EGGED"

My mind goes from one Holiday to the next, I Love em all!!! Since all of my children are grown I "EGG" kids and I don't have to wait till Easter. This is so fun!! I give them this page inside of a plastic page protector and about three eggs each full of candy or snacks. I place it at their front door and ring the door bell and hide. They get to eat the candy and then go "EGG" someone else. I think I might "EGG" some adults and turn their upside down smiles around.

Thistle Hunting

I was getting my hair cut the other day at a local beauty shop, "Cuttin Up" in Waller Texas. As Erin is cutting my hair we were swapping information about the families, what my kids are doing, what her family is doing. Then she tells me her father went thistle hunting without her?????? I asked what do you mean, thistle???? She said you know those thorny weeds that grow out in the pasture. I was just checking to make sure this isn't some new fangled thing I haven't heard about. She told me her and her father would go Thistle Hunting, they would take a shovel, loosen up the dirt under the thistle and then (with heavy duty gloves on) pull it out of the ground. I'm thinkin' what a great dad, he had his daughter spending time with him and digging up weeds at the same time and it was fun. WOW Now if I called my grandson up and asked him to go Thistle Hunting with me he would think I was the greatest Grandma ever. Thistle's are about a foot and a half tall and yes they are prickly. If you look at the photo one of the buds have already opened and the seeds are scattered. I didn't take this picture at my house, I couldn't find one darn thistle in our whole yard. My husband took me down the road and they were everywhere in the ditches. So here I am in the ditch taking photos of this thistle....... I guess that makes me a Thistle Hunter too????
